Blaise Pascal created an early public bus system

Before he was torturing high schoolers with his probability theories and triangles, Blaise Pascal was just a guy trying to get around Paris. In 1662, he launched a system of horse-drawn carriages running on fixed routes with regular schedules and set fares. It was an instant hit with the nobility until they realized poor people could ride it too, at which point it promptly went out of business.
