Nothing says 'I am an all-powerful wizard' quite like literally eating your own feces. The notorious occultist wanted to prove he had completely transcended human aversions and ego by consuming bodily waste during his magical rituals. Ironically, going to such extreme, revolting lengths just to prove how edgy and enlightened you are is probably the most ego-driven thing a person could possibly do.
