The terrifying spellbooks and dark mystical grimoires collected by nervous European authorities were frequently heavily encoded scientific notebooks. Because early chemists and astronomers rightly feared brutal prosecution by the Inquisition, they actively disguised their dangerous mathematical and botanical findings beneath layers of confusing demonic sigils and poetic spells.
