The ultra-lightweight material favored by expensive sports cars starts off remarkably fragile. It is woven from individual strands of carbon crystals that are dramatically thinner than a spider web, then bound together in a stiff resin matrix. By themselves, the threads snap easily, but together they can stop a bullet while weighing practically nothing.
