When America sent jazz musicians as Cold War ambassadors

While the CIA was busy trying to explode Fidel Castro’s cigars, the US State Department decided their best weapon against communism was a trumpet. In the 1950s, the American government deployed jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong to the Soviet bloc and the Middle East as "Jazz Ambassadors." The irony was incredibly thick: America was using Black musicians to project a global image of freedom and equality, while those same musicians couldn't legally use white bathrooms back home. Armstrong eventually snapped, outright refusing to tour the USSR after the Little Rock Nine segregation crisis.
