A closer look
Post-production color grading on The Matrix specifically utilized a sickening green tint for every single scene set within the digital simulation to make the audience feel subconsciously uneasy; the directors wanted the fake world to visually resemble the monochromatic monochrome green glow of early computer monitors, contrasting sharply with the cold blue-tinted reality of the post-apocalyptic real world, acting as an incredibly subtle visual cue that fundamentally changed the way action movies utilized color palettes for the next two decades, yet fast forward to today and Hollywood color grading has become so aggressively stylized that you cannot even tell what time of day a scene is supposed to take place, with half of the streaming shows currently in production looking like they were filmed inside a dimly lit closet through a pair of dirty sunglasses, desperately trying to emulate the artistic brilliance of a late-nineties cyberpunk masterpiece while completely missing the point
