Navy destroyers babied the first ocean crossing

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

Eight years before Charles Lindbergh claimed all the glory, a US Navy flying boat called the Curtiss NC-4 actually crossed the Atlantic first. But they cheated spectacularly. The Navy stationed a chain of 68 destroyers across the ocean to act as a breadcrumb trail of searchlights and rescue ships. It took them nearly three weeks of pit stops, proving early aviation was mostly just highly stressful boating.
