Ground effect drastically boosts lift near landing strips

The earth itself constantly interferes with landings by aggressively pushing planes back into the sky. Flying within a few feet of the runway traps high pressure air directly under the wings, creating a floating air cushion known as ground effect. Planes will literally refuse to land, stubbornly floating down the runway on compressed air.
