Major League Baseball players usually spend their off-seasons golfing or filming terrible car commercials. Moe Berg spent his hunting Nazis. A profoundly weird, multilingual catcher who bounced around the leagues in the 1930s, Berg was recruited by the precursor to the CIA. His crowning achievement was attending a lecture by top German physicist Werner Heisenberg in Switzerland with a pistol in his pocket, under explicit orders to assassinate him if the Nazis were close to building an atomic bomb. Berg decided Heisenberg was clueless and casually went back to baseball.
