When country clubs decided Black women shouldn't be allowed to figure skate, Mabel Fairbanks didn't just walk away. Barred from official competition in the 1930s, she bought a pair of secondhand skates and built a shadow network, coaching future minority champions. The establishment wouldn't let her win medals, so she engineered a generation of skaters to steal them instead.
