Because slapping a flat touchpad below the keyboard was apparently too mainstream. IBM boldly jammed a tiny, stiff red rubber nub directly between the G and H keys. Users had to aggressively push this miniature joystick with their index finger to agonizingly drag the cursor across the screen, a feature that stubborn business people fiercely defended for decades.
