Carbon fiber starts out looking exactly like heavy black yarn. To make it stronger than steel, engineers wrap it in sticky resin and bake it inside massive industrial pressure cookers. The heat locks the microscopic carbon bonds together, resulting in a painfully expensive, perfectly rigid shell.
