How nitrogen gives steel a tougher outer skin

Standard steel components wear out too fast under friction. Nitriding involves baking the metal inside a highly toxic ammonia atmosphere. The harsh heat physically drives tiny nitrogen atoms deep into the metallic surface lattice, drastically expanding the crystal structure to create an agonizingly tough, wear-resistant outer shell.
