The sofa came from Warner Bros.’ storage
The orange sofa on Friends was found in the basement of Warner Bros. Studios, where it was being stored—not commissioned as a custom piece for Central Perk. The production’s set decorator selected it for the coffee-shop set, giving an existing piece of studio furniture a prominent role in the show.
A practical choice became a visual signature
That kind of reuse is part of how television sets are furnished: a studio can draw on pieces it already owns rather than build every object from scratch. For Central Perk, the sofa also gave the actors a recognizable place to gather, making it a natural focal point whenever the friends met at the café.
Once the show made that corner familiar, the sofa stopped reading as ordinary studio furniture. Its lasting fame began with a simple production choice: someone found it in storage and put it on set.
