Batman’s animated shadows started on black paper
Why bother painting shadows when you can just start in the dark? To capture the incredibly moody, film noir aesthetic of Gotham City, the creators of the 1990s animated series mandated that all background art be painted on completely black paper instead of standard white. It was a massive headache for the animators, but it made the gritty art style legendary.
