Transporting the injured off the battlefield used to resemble a strange, oversized picnic arrangement. During the first World War, many stretchers were hastily constructed from woven wicker because it was relatively lightweight and abundantly available. Unfortunately, carrying someone in a giant basket through deep mud proved to be exactly as structurally disastrous as it sounds.
