A Horn for Sorting Truth from Falsehood
The Xiezhi (also written xiezhi) is a legendary Chinese creature, often pictured as a one-horned beast with a goatlike body. Its defining power was not simply strength: it could recognize wrongdoing. In the tale, when competing accounts could not be settled by argument, the creature singled out the person at fault and charged.
That makes the ram more than a spectacular punishment. The horn turns an invisible judgment—who is lying?—into a physical, unmistakable verdict. Instead of weighing testimony through a long exchange, the Xiezhi’s attack ends the dispute in an instant.
A Mythic Image of Justice
The creature became associated with fairness and the ability to distinguish right from wrong. Its legend gave justice a vivid ideal: an authority that could see through deception and act without hesitation. The image also hints at why the power belonged to a supernatural beast. People can disagree about evidence; a creature that always knows the truth belongs to the world of moral aspiration, not ordinary fact-finding.
The memorable twist is that the Xiezhi does not expose a liar with a clever argument. It makes deception impossible to hide by turning a hidden moral judgment into a charge.
