Why observatories fire lasers into the sky
HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART
Starlight gets hopelessly blurry when passing through Earth's turbulent atmosphere. To compensate, astronomers fire massive, bright lasers straight up into the sodium layer of the sky to create a fake, artificial guide star. A specialized mirror constantly warps itself to keep the laser focused, simultaneously un-blurring the rest of the universe in the process.
