Why movie projectors keep the picture from flickering

Watching a film reel is just staring at thousands of still photographs aggressively jerked past a light bulb. If you just pulled the film continuously, you would see a massive, blurry smear. Projectors use a violently spinning mechanical shutter that physically blocks the intense light exactly while the film moves to the next frame, hiding the motion from your wildly easily-fooled brain.
