Interplay Productions chose Nuka-Cola bottle caps as the primary currency for the post-apocalyptic Fallout universe specifically because they needed something that required high-level manufacturing technology to prevent wasteland counterfeiters from simply painting rocks. The game lore explicitly states that the technology to perfectly crimp the metal edges of a bottle cap and paint the logo was lost in the nuclear war, making them a perfectly stable, finite resource to back a new economic system built out of radioactive garbage. It is genuinely brilliant world-building that inadvertently sparked a bizarre real-world obsession, culminating in a hardcore fan literally mailing two thousand dirty bottle caps to Bethesda Studios in 2015 to officially pre-order a copy of Fallout 4. The developers actually honored the chaotic transaction, validating the absolutely unhinged behavior of a guy who had spent seven years hoarding literal trash just to avoid paying sixty real dollars for a highly anticipated video game
