A closer look
You look at a stunning photo of an anime swordsman dramatically leaping through the rain, but you don't see the humiliated intern hiding out of frame. In high-end cosplay performance photography, especially in Japan, photographers use highly coordinated "kuroko" (stagehands dressed in black) to manually create practical effects. These unsung heroes crouch just inches outside the camera lens, aggressively throwing buckets of water, tossing smoke bombs, and holding fishing lines to make capes billow perfectly. Behind every majestic, gravity-defying superhero shot is a very stressed-out friend holding a leaf blower.
