A closer look
Long before the modern snowmobile became the vehicle of choice for rural daredevils, early pioneers like Elon J. Farnsworth were desperately trying to slap primitive continuous tracks onto winter sleds. The idea was to conquer unplowed snowscapes without relying on exhausted horses or sheer stubbornness. Early tracked snow vehicles were clunky, deafeningly loud, and broke down so often that walking was usually faster. Still, the absurd concept of marrying a tank tread to a toboggan eventually paved the way for modern extreme winter transport, saving us all from the misery of snowshoes.
