Why Baccarat Cards Get Torn

In baccarat, the cards are dealt by the dealer, but players may be allowed to reveal them slowly by bending or “squeezing” them. The suspense is part of the ritual: a player can expose a card a little at a time, turning a quick deal into a tense moment. Some superstitious players take the handling further, folding or even tearing the cards as they look for signs of luck.

A Damaged Card Has to Leave the Game

Once a card is bent or ripped, the dealer cannot safely keep using it. A damaged card may be harder to identify or handle consistently, and any unusual mark could raise concerns about fairness. The dealer removes it and brings in a replacement, sometimes drawing from another deck prepared for the table.

That exchange is a practical safeguard, not a change to baccarat’s outcome: the card’s value is already set, and damaging it cannot alter what was dealt. But it can interrupt the round and consume more cards. At a busy table, a player’s private luck ritual becomes extra work for the dealer—and a reminder that even a game built around chance depends on keeping the cards in reliable condition.
