A closer look
Franz Melde just wanted to prove a point about waves, so he attached a string to a tuning fork and cranked it up. What he demonstrated was the hypnotic phenomenon of standing waves. By tuning the tension and frequency perfectly, the string vibrates in sections, creating nodes—points on the string that literally do not move at all, despite the violent shaking around them. It looks like a digital glitch in real life, but it's just pure constructive and destructive interference mathematically canceling out reality.
