Bizarre European tradition of whispering to honey bees

In Celtic and Western European mythology, beekeepers practiced a solemn ritual called telling the bees. Whenever a major life event or death occurred in the household, someone would drape the hives in black cloth and whisper the news, fearing the offended insects might otherwise leave.
