Why fictional phone numbers start with 555

Every single fictional character seemingly uses the exact same bizarre cellular provider. When audiences used to hear a phone number on screen, thousands of incredibly bored people would immediately try to call it, severely jamming local telephone exchanges. To prevent mass telecom collapses, providers permanently reserved the '555' prefix strictly for fake, unassigned Hollywood usage.
