Before cell phones were even a concept, Motorola was trying to fix the absolute silence of long road trips. Founded as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in 1928, they found major success by creating one of the first commercially successful car radios. They combined the word "motor" with "ola" (derived from the popular Victrola record players) to brand the device. They eventually adopted the catchy product name for the entire company.
