Arming thousands of enslaved warriors and teaching them elite cavalry tactics is a bold move that always goes wrong. The Mamluks were purchased as boys to serve as a loyal bodyguard force, but eventually realized that since they were the only ones holding the weapons, they could just legally depose their masters and run the entire Sultanate themselves.
