In 1922, DeWitt and Lila Wallace couldn't get a single publisher to back their idea of condensing existing magazine articles into a tiny booklet. So they rented a windowless basement room in New York's Greenwich Village, located directly underneath an illegal prohibition-era speakeasy. They literally packaged wholesome American trivia while drunk patrons partied right above their heads.
