A closer look
The Philco Predicta looked like a beautiful sci-fi television, but its insides were an absolute engineering dumpster fire. To mass-produce these mid-century sets, Philco went all-in on early printed circuit boards using incredibly cheap, unproven materials. The result? The tubes ran so hot they practically deep-fried the underlying phenolic boards, causing components to literally snap off and circuits to sever. It was a stunning piece of space-age design that functionally served as an expensive, self-immolating space heater.
