A closer look
Minecraft features eerie ambient cave sounds that randomly trigger when a player is in the dark, explicitly designed by the game's audio team to induce mild paranoia. Millions of players have desperately scrambled to place torches in blocky subterranean tunnels, entirely because a Swedish sound engineer thought it would be funny to make a friendly building game feel like a psychological horror film. You can be happily constructing a perfectly geometric dirt house, only to hear a screeching metallic whine that convinces you your digital life is in immediate danger. It is a fantastic example of a developer using a few kilobytes of audio files to emotionally manipulate children and adults alike into developing a completely irrational fear of pixelated shadows
