A closer look
We have collectively decided to ignore the actual definition of a word just because it sounds cool. The term 'moped' was coined in the 1950s by Swedish journalist Harald Nielsen, combining the motor with the bicycle pedals that early scooters possessed to help get them uphill. Today, basically no mopeds have pedals, but we still call them that, making it the most linguistically inaccurate form of transit currently on the streets.
