A closer look
Sound designer Gary Rydstrom created the iconic velociraptor communication noises in the 1993 film Jurassic Park by recording tortoises having sex. During a visit to a wildlife park, he noticed that mating tortoises produce a very distinct, rhythmic barking sound that perfectly fit the terrifying prehistoric predators. Naturally, Hollywood took this magical moment of slow-moving reptilian romance and repurposed it to traumatize an entire generation of millennials. So, whenever you rewatch that famous kitchen scene where the raptors are hunting the kids, just remember that you are actually listening to two giant turtles getting busy. It adds a completely different layer of horror to the cinematic experience, proving once and again that movie magic is mostly just underpaid audio engineers doing whatever it takes to avoid paying for expensive sound libraries!
