Why mercury stays liquid at room temperature

Mercury is the metal that refuses to commit to a solid relationship. Because its atoms hold onto their outer electrons incredibly tightly, they don't share well with surrounding atoms, resulting in a weak crystal lattice. Thus, it just sloshes around as a wildly toxic, highly dense liquid mirror while all the other metals mock it.
