Why dolls were buried under old houses

During the Victorian era, builders secretly entombed crude, headless dolls inside the foundation walls of new mansions to act as scapegoats for demonic forces. The belief was that a wandering curse would attack the effigy in the walls rather than the vulnerable sleeping children above. Finding one of these decayed relics during a renovation is considered a horrific omen.
