Why RPG characters need moral boundaries

Expecting an adult to pretend to be an elf without turning into a total sociopath requires strict boundaries. Alignment charts force players into predefined moral boxes, preventing the heroic paladin from randomly deciding to rob a tavern just because they are bored. It is essentially a behavioral leash for imaginary characters.
