A closer look

Evolution is heavily reliant on the molecular copying machinery occasionally making terrible, highly consequential typos. A random mutation might swap a single letter in millions, usually resulting in a completely broken instruction that is quickly discarded. But every once in a while, that random typo actually creates a slightly more efficient protein, accidentally giving the organism a massive advantage. Progress is quite literally driven by microscopic clerical errors.
