Defibrillators were first tested on dogs

Before we used giant electric paddles to dramatically restart human hearts in every single hospital television drama, we used them on dogs. The first successful closed-chest defibrillation was performed on a dog that had been deliberately put into cardiac arrest by researchers. Once they figured out they could shock the canine back to life, they finally upgraded to human trials.
