If you had a premature baby in the early 1900s, traditional hospitals basically shrugged, so you took them to the carnival. Doctor Martin Couney funded his groundbreaking, life-saving baby incubators by putting them on display at amusement parks like Coney Island. People quite literally paid an admission fee to gawk at premature infants, and that ticket money funded the technology that kept them alive.
