Funerary crape on doorknobs signaled grim passing

Before mass communication, hanging a depressing black ribbon was the original status update. Tying heavy black crape to the exterior knob of a house was a silent, ominous broadcast that someone inside had perished. It effectively warned neighbors to either offer immediate condolences or stay far away to avoid the misery.
