Optical text recognition guesses letters using light edges

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

Scanners do not actually read. They search for distinct patterns of high-contrast light and dark pixels. When it sees two slanted dark lines meeting at a peak, it blindly assumes an 'A' is present. This is exactly why it constantly confuses the number '0' with the letter 'O'.
