If medieval syrup wasn't quite doing the trick, you could always entirely upgrade to heavily pulverized garden pests. A prominent 18th-century medical guide heavily recommended actively crushing live snails, mixing their highly slimy remains with earthworms, and aggressively boiling the entire foul concoction into a broth. It was entirely prescribed for severe ailments, mostly because resisting the cure was highly preferable to actually drinking it.
