A closer look
Talk about coming back from vacation to an absolute mess. Sergei Krikalev went to the Mir space station in May 1991 as a proud Soviet citizen. While he was orbiting the Earth, the entire Soviet Union completely dissolved. The newly formed Russian government couldn't afford to send a rocket up to get him, leaving him drifting in orbit for 311 days. He eventually returned to a completely different country with a significantly lower budget.
