A closer look
In the 1950s, a children's show called "Winky Dink and You" invented interactive television by asking kids to draw bridges and ropes directly onto their TV screens to help the cartoon hero. You were supposed to buy a special "magic screen" plastic overlay from the network to protect the glass. Naturally, thousands of cheap parents didn't buy the kit, resulting in an entire generation of children aggressively gouging permanent crayon wax into their family's immensely expensive cathode-ray tubes.
