Giving the audience control is usually just a trap designed to make them feel terrible. In Netflix's interactive film 'Black Mirror: Bandersnatch', the failure states aren't traditional game-overs where you simply try again; they are narratively woven psychological punishments. If you refuse to make a choice or deliberately pick the boring path, the film openly mocks your cowardice, forces the protagonist into mundane misery, and loops back around, weaponizing the UI to guilt-trip you into picking up the murder weapon.
