London’s first subway was dug by hand

Before giant boring machines existed, Victorian laborers just looked at the ground and started shoveling. The original London Underground was built using the 'cut and cover' method. They literally trenched up the middle of the street by hand, built a brick tunnel inside the hole, and put the dirt back on top. It was a nightmare of mud, collapsing roads, and sheer stubbornness.
