Why baccarat uses a card shoe
A baccarat shoe is a holder that lets the dealer draw cards from the front of a prepared stack, one at a time. It keeps the remaining cards together and makes each deal a simple, repeatable motion rather than requiring the dealer to pick up and manage loose decks.
A full eight-deck load contains 416 cards: eight ordinary 52-card decks, with no jokers. The decks are shuffled before they go into the shoe. Once play begins, the dealer can deal many hands before the cards need to be gathered and shuffled again, reducing interruptions at the table.
How the shoe fits the deal
In standard baccarat, cards go to two hands, called Player and Banker. Each starts with two cards; depending on the cards already dealt, a hand may receive a third. The dealing rules determine when that happens, so the shoe’s job is to deliver the next card—not to decide who gets it.
Because cards are drawn from the same prepared stack in a fixed order, the shoe also helps keep the deal orderly and visible. Its capacity is practical: fewer decks would mean more frequent reshuffling, while the eight-deck shoe lets a round of play continue through a substantial run of cards before the table has to stop and reset.
