A closer look

Before you could read dialogue directly on top of the actors' faces, you had to endure mandatory reading breaks. During the silent film era, dialogue and vital plot explanations were printed on separate title cards, known as intertitles, which were heavily spliced between the actual scenes. You essentially watched a brief pantomime performance, and then immediately read a full paragraph to understand why everyone was so dramatically upset.
