Clickbait used to require actual bodily harm. In 1887, 23-year-old journalist Nellie Bly convinced a judge she was entirely unhinged just so she could get committed to the Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell's Island. She spent ten days eating rancid food, enduring ice-water baths, and talking to women who were perfectly sane but couldn't speak English. Her resulting exposé shattered the institution and forced the city to completely overhaul mental health funding.
