Because tying an expensive blue rock to your body is obviously the most scientifically sound way to deflect a demonic hex. Lapidaries were mystical books that assigned magical properties to gemstones. If you had the plague, terrible luck, or suspected your neighbor was a witch, you were supposed to swallow powdered gems. Unsurprisingly, swallowing crushed glass did not improve their life expectancy.
